“This genocide implicates us all,” they wrote. “We bear witness to the crimes of genocide, and we refuse to approve them by our silence.”
300 and eighty writers and organisations have signed an open letter claiming that Israel’s conflict in Gaza is genocidal, calling for an instantaneous ceasefire.
This consists of the likes of Zadie Smith, Ian McEwan, Russell T Davies, Kevin Barry and Sinéad Gleeson. The letter was organised by Horatio Clare, Kapka Kassabova and Monique Roffey, based mostly off of Karim Kattan’s authentic work printed in Liberation on Monday and signed by 300 Francophone writers.
“We, the undersigned writers of England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Eire and the Republic of Eire, ask our nations and the peoples of the world to affix us in ending our collective silence and inaction in the face of horror,” they wrote.
The group opened their letter with a poem written by Hiba Abu Nada, a Palestinian girl who was killed by Israeli airstrikes, titled A Star Mentioned Yesterday.
The poem reads, “And if at some point, O Mild / All the galaxies / Of the whole universe / Had no more room for us / You’ll say: ‘Enter my coronary heart, / There you’ll lastly be protected.’”
The writers urge for rapid entry to meals and medical help in Gaza by the UN, in addition to a ceasefire. If a ceasefire shouldn’t be carried out, they demand sanctions be imposed on Israel.
“The use of the phrases ‘genocide’ or ‘acts of genocide’ to explain what is occurring in Gaza is now not debated by worldwide authorized consultants or human rights organizations,” they wrote. “Amnesty Worldwide, Médecins Sans Frontières, Human Rights Watch, the Worldwide Federation for Human Rights, the United Nations Human Rights Council, and many different specialists and historians have clearly recognized genocide or acts of genocide in Gaza, enacted by the Israel Defence Drive and directed by the authorities of Israel.”
The writers additionally clarify their “absolute opposition to and loathing of antisemitism,” stating they “stand in solidarity with the resistance of Palestinian, Jewish, and Israeli folks to the genocidal insurance policies of the present Israeli authorities.”
